EXHIBITION: Charrería: exploring the human-horse connection in Mexican Rodeo
Center Of The American West
For the past ten years, Chris Sessions has documented Colorado-based Charros and Charras as they compete in charreadas across the U.S. & Mexico. From masterful use of the lasso to the skirmish techniques of the escaramuzas, the 21 stunning black & white and color photographs selected for this exhibit speak to the extraordinary connection that happens between horse and rider when they test their luck.
In scales both vast and intimate, we invite you to explore a historic tradition & bond that continues in today's American West.

CHARRERÍA
The national sport of Mexico that originated in the Spanish hacienda era. A precursor to rodeo (from Spanish rodear / "round-up"), a charreada consists of a series of equestrian suertes ("luck" / competitions) as taken on by charros (traditional horsemen pictured above) as well as charras (women) in the synchronized escaramuza routine. |
